The Red Sox and Boston College have expressed an interest in bringing the Atlantic Coast Conference baseball tournament to Fenway Park, but according to a source in the BC athletic department, BC and Boston University are working on something more dramatic: college hockey at Fenway.
A proposed doubleheader would likely be held next December, involving BC, BU, and a pair of teams from the Midwest, possibly Michigan and Michigan State.
"It's an idea we're seriously considering," said the source.
Outdoor hockey would be nothing new to Michigan or Michigan State since the Central Collegiate Hockey Association rivals played before a record 74,554 fans Oct. 6, 2001, at Michigan State's Spartan Stadium, finishing in a 3-3 tie.
To create the outdoor rink, Michigan State officials put down a portable ice surface over a layered platform and a series of aluminum plates, which were kept frozen by a 281-ton refrigeration unit.
A similar arrangement would need to be rigged at Fenway, but playing an outdoor game in December is much iffier than in October because of the possibility of snow.
Although the initial reaction at Michigan State was skepticism, the feeling afterward was that it was a success. Staging a doubleheader in a hockey-rich environment such as Boston, with the added mystique of Fenway Park, could also bring a positive reaction.
