No-hitter tidbits

Clay Buchholz's no-no is the 17th official no-hitter in franchise history and the first since Derek Lowe's against the Devil Rays April 27, 2002, also the last no-hitter at Fenway Park.

There have been 12 official no-hitters thrown at Fenway Park, eight by Red Sox pitchers.

Jason Varitek has caught each of the club's last three no-hitters.

Buchholz is the 20th major league rookie to accomplish the feat.

Buchholz's no-hitter is the third in the American League this season, joining Chicago's Mark Buehrle (April 18 vs. Texas) and Detroit's Justin Verlander (June 12 vs. Milwaukee).

Prior to this year, Lowe's was the last no-hitter in the American League.

He is the first rookie to toss a no-hitter since Anibal Sanchez did it for the Marlins Sept. 6, 2006 vs. Arizona.

The last American League rookie to throw a no-no was Wilson Alvarez Aug. 11, 1991, for the White Sox vs. Baltimore.

Buchholz is the third pitcher since 1900 to throw a no-hitter in either his first or second major league start, and the second pitcher to throw one in his second major league game, joining Alvarez.

Bobo Holloman, who had appeared in relief earlier in the season, threw a no-hitter in his first career start for the St. Louis Browns May 6, 1953, vs. the Philadelphia Athletics.

Buchholz is the first Red Sox rookie to win each of his first two major league starts since Juan Peña May 8-14, 1999.

Last night was the first nine-inning complete-game shutout by a Red Sox rookie since Paul Quantrill did it July 4, 1993, at Seattle.
