Under other circumstances, it might have been cause for a Coco-palooza. But in the midst of arguably the worst game played by the Red Sox this season, little notice was taken of Coco Crisp's first home run of the year at Fenway Park.

Crisp connected in the fifth inning off Angels lefthander Joe Saunders after a leadoff walk to Jason Varitek, cutting the Los Angeles lead to 3-2. Crisp, who singled in the ninth, had come into the game 3 for his last 35. His five previous home runs had come on the road. His last home run at Fenway came July 5, 2007, and this was just his second since Sept. 6, 2006, a span of 108 games.

Crisp broke back on a shallow fly by Vladimir Guerrero, the ball dropping in for a double in the sixth, when the Angels scored five times.

Home run at home

Minor league shortstop Casey Kelly, the team's No. 1 draft choice in June, played in a Gulf Coast League game in his hometown of Sarasota for the first time, and it was an occasion worth remembering. Kelly, playing against the Gulf Coast Reds, managed by his father, Pat, had three hits, including his first professional home run . . . Bartolo Colon (back) threw a side session yesterday and is scheduled to throw another Saturday . . . Shortstop Alex Cora questioned the veracity of the quotes attributed to Manny Ramírez in an interview with ESPNDeportes reporter Enrique Rojas. "Take it from where it's coming from," he said. "I read about [Miguel] Tejada [possibly coming to the Sox], and that was from the same source. This is not the first time that ESPNDeportes, and I'm sorry to say it, but whatever, you take it from where it's coming from. I was surprised when I read it. When did they talk, in the seventh?"
