Though it was agreed to Jan. 30, the Red Sox finally announced yesterday that Jason Varitek would return this season, after the captain passed his physical Thursday.

Varitek signed a one-year deal with player and team options for 2010.

The catcher will earn $5 million this season, and $5 million in 2010 if the team picks up its option, or $3 million if he picks up his option. Varitek can make an additional $2 million in incentives, but only if the player option is exercised.

Varitek, who will turn 37 in April, is looking to bounce back from the worst offensive season of his career, when he hit just .220 with 13 home runs and 43 RBIs.

To make room for Varitek on the 40-man roster, the Sox outrighted first baseman/outfielder Jeff Bailey to Triple A. Bailey elected free agency, then re-signed on a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.
