According to a baseball source, Hazen will remain with the Sox. His duties won’t be different, including no new title, though he will be granted more autonomy based on the changing role of assistant general manager Ben Cherington.

With the departure of Hoyer, Cherington will move from overseeing amateur scouting and drafting and player development to focusing more on the major league club, including roster construction and contract negotiations.

Hazen has overseen a minor league system that has been ranked among baseball’s best during the Theo Epstein regime, though it was No. 13 in Baseball America’s rankings, due largely to the graduation of a number of key players from the minors to the majors in recent years. The Sox rose from No. 23 in 2004, and were ranked No. 8 in 2006 when Hazen joined the team, all the way to No. 2 in 2008 with the combination of Jason McLeod’s amateur scouting and drafting efforts and Hazen’s oversight of player development.

Hazen played for two years in the Padres system, and came to the Red Sox from the Indians front office.
