Several of the organization’s top prospects, including righthander Casey Kelly and outfielder Ryan Kalish, are among the 20 nonroster players invited to spring training by the Red Sox yesterday.

The 20-year-old Kelly was a pitcher and shortstop in Single A (Greenville and Salem) last season before deciding over the winter to focus solely on pitching. The 2008 first-round pick had a 2.08 ERA last year and is expected to begin the season with Double A Portland.

Kalish is expected to compete for a job at Triple A Pawtucket. He played all three outfield positions for Portland last season, where he hit .271 in 103 games. He’s been a .281 hitter in the minors since starting with the organization in 2006.

The other pitchers invited to camp were righthanders Randor Bierd, Fernando Cabrera, Adam Mills, Edwin Moreno, Joe Nelson, Jorge Sosa, and Kyle Weiland along with lefthanders Kris Johnson and Brian Shouse.

Catchers Luis Exposito and Gustavo Molina received invitations. Lars Anderson, Yamaico Navarro, Angel Sanchez, and Gil Velazquez were the infielders selected. It is an important season for Anderson, a prominent prospect who hit only .233 and struck out 114 times for Portland last season.

Impressive young outfielders Zach Daeges and Che-Hsuan Lin will be in camp along with Darnell McDonald, a first-round pick of the Orioles in 1997 who has since played for five other organizations. He hit .267 in 47 games with Cincinnati last season.

The Red Sox will open camp with 60 players, half of them pitchers. Barring injury, the Sox have only two spots open on the 25-man roster, one seat in the bullpen and another on the bench.

Pitchers and catchers report to Fort Myers, Fla., Feb. 18 with the first workout two days later. The first full-squad workout will be Feb. 24. The Red Sox open exhibition play March 3 with a split-squad doubleheader against Northeastern and Boston College at City of Palms Park.
