Revisiting rock bottom

Sure, the Red Sox have left you with nothing to watch on TV this late in the season for the first time since 2002, but you'll always have 2004. In that spirit, all this week and next we're going to recap last year's historic ALCS between the Red Sox and Yankees. Today, Game 3 ...

This was the low point, a horrid 19-8 loss that had the Red Sox on the brink of elimination. Of course, we all know what happened next. Some memorable quotes from after the game:

Bronson Arroyo: "It was just a [butt]-kicking all the way around. You would try to forget about it during the regular season, but to get destroyed like this when it's crunch time and have a football score up there at the end of the game, it's definitely embarrassing."

Johnny Damon: "We have to do what's never been done in history, and that's come back from a 3-0 deficit."

Tim Wakefield: "It's going to be a tough road for us. It's never fun being down, 3-0, but I think everybody in this clubhouse is still optimistic."

Terry Francona: "It was disappointing for everybody, but we're not done. I fully expect we'll come out [tonight] and play our [butts] off."

Bob Ryan: Nothing good has come from this. Nothing. We all wanted the Yankees. What, dare I say it, idiots we all were.

Dan Shaughnessy: So there. For the 86th consecutive autumn, the Red Sox are not going to win the World Series. No baseball team in history has recovered from a 3-0 deficit and this most-promising Sox season in 18 years could be officially over tonight. Mercy.

Eric Wilbur: This series is over. Baseball in Boston is over for another season. If you headed to the game this evening, you're forgiven for leaving in the seventh. Not to avoid traffic. To avoid watching the Yankees celebrate on your team's home turf.
