Terry Francona was headed into Mass. General Hospital today for his knee replacement surgery, which is scheduled to be performed by Dr. Dennis Burke on Friday.

Tito's medical history -- he's still on blood thinners after near-fatal brushes with pulmonary embolisms, staph infections in his knees and later massive internal bleeding in his thigh -- make this anything but a routine procedure. But he has been assured that he will be safe, and is going to have his right knee replaced.

Eventually, he may have his left knee replaced, too.

The man, as I noted on Monday, has had a total of 18 knee surgeries, nine on each knee. Mercy.
