Some Red Sox minor league highlights from the last week:

  • While the Boston Red Sox were on their way to a 9-1 win over the D-Rays last night, Triple-A Pawtucket had already posted a 6-0 shutout over Tampa Bay’s International League Durham affiliate earlier in the day. Pitchers Jimmy Serrano (6.0 IP, 5 H, 6 K), Manny Delcarmen (2.0 IP, H, 2 K) and Mike Holtz (1.0 IP, 0 H, 3 K) combined to keep the Bulls offense at bay.

  • Pitcher Chris Smith (Double-A Portland) took a no-hitter into the 7th inning Tuesday vs. New Britain (Twins), combining with Barry Hertzler (1.0 IP) and Edgar Martinez (1.0 IP) on a 2-hit, 3-0 shutout of the Rock Cats.

  • Jacoby Ellsbury, the Red Sox first pick in the 2005 draft, has hit safely in seven straight games for Wilmington, and in 11 of his 12 games overall this season. The 22-year-old outfielder has gone 11-for-29 (.379) with six RBI, five runs and six stolen bases during his current seven-game run. Rated by Baseball America as the No. 6 prospect in the Red Sox organization prior to the 2006 season, he ranks among Carolina League leaders in batting average (3rd at .373), RBI (tied for 5th with 10), runs (tied for 5th with 10), stolen bases (tied for 2nd with 6) and hits (3rd with 19).

  • PawSox lefty Abe Alvarez has gone 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA (5 ER/18.0 IP) through his first three starts. The 23-year-old has won both of his last two starts, posting a 2.08 ERA (3 ER/13.0 IP) while allowing only four hits in that stretch. The Sox’ second pick (49th overall) in 2003 is limiting the opposition to a .103 (6-for-58) batting average.

  • Cla Meredith, who you may remember from last season when he was called up to the Boston bullpen briefly, has not allowed a run in 9.1 innings over five appearances. The 22-year-old has worked two innings or more in three of his five outings, including a season-high 2.1 innings twice. Selected in the sixth round of the 2004 draft, Meredith has 10 strikeouts in 9.1 innings, and is holding opposing batters to a .188 (6-for-32) average.

  • Hyde Park's Manny Delcarmen has pitched scoreless ball through his first 5 outings (10.0 IP). The Boston native has 10 strikeouts and only three walks in 10.0 innings, while posting a .152 (5-for-33) opponents batting average.

  • Boston's closer of the future Craig Hansen (four appearances, 8.0 IP) and RHP Edgar Martinez (6 appearances, 7.2 IP) have yet to allow an earned run in 2006. The 22-year-old Hansen tossed 2.0 hitless innings yesterday vs. New Britain, and has 8 strikeouts in 8.0 innings this season. Martinez has collected a save in both of his last two outings, and has pitched hitless ball his last three times out (3.2 IP). He has not allowed a walk this season.
