Damon tips cap

By Eric Wilbur, Boston.com Staff

Give Johnny Damon this: He knew how to play the crowd.

Greeted by deafening boos when he strode to the plate in the top of the first, Damon leaned over and whispered something to Sox catcher Doug Mirabelli, then proceeded to tip his cap in the direction of the Sox fans deriding him. That resulted in a mixture of cheers and boos from the fans, who appeared to appreciate the gesture.

Damon flew out to right field for the first out of the game against Tim Wakefield to the joy of the Fenway crowd.
