The Sox have decided on David Pauley to pitch on Wednesday in place of David Wells. Pauley has never pitched above Double-A but was in major league camp this spring and started against the Phillies in spring training. He went four innings but allowed a three-run homer to Chase Utley in the first inning.

Pauley, who came to the Sox organization as part of the Dave Roberts-Jay Payton trade in 2004, was 2-3 with 2.39 ERA in 10 starts for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs.

There was no decision yet on putting Wells on the disabled list with his sore knee and the Sox have yet to announce their roster move to make room for Pauley.

Mark Loretta, who had played in every game so far, was out of lineup for the first time this season. He was hit on his left foot in Monday night's game and will see a podiatrist during the trip.

Alex Cora will play second base in his place.

Manny Ramirez, who returned to the lineup with a homer on Monday, turns 34 years old today.

The Sox scouting report on Blue Jays starter Gustavo Chacin says be reading for anything except perhaps the kitchen sink. It says he throws a regular fastball, a cutting fastball and a sinking fastball along with a slider, curveball and changeup.
