Josh Beckett pitched 5 1/3 perfect innings tonight before a David Bell ground ball single up the middle in the top of the sixth ended his bid. He had retired the first 16 batters he faced.

There have been just 17 perfect games in major league history. The last one came on May 18, 2004, when Randy Johnson performed the feat against the Braves.
