NEW YORK -- It's official. Left-hander Jon Lester will make his major league debut Saturday in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park, Sox manager Terry Francona announced today.

All of this was weather-permitting, but the skies had cleared and the sun was trying to peek out as we blogged.

Francona said that Tim Wakefield would go Friday against the Rangers pending how his aching back felt after throwing later today.

Josh Beckett will pitch in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader. And Matt Clement was backed up until Sunday to give him extra time to recover after a stressful week of trying to figure out mechanical issues.

Odd man out?

Rookie David Pauley, who pitched so well in going 6-2/3 innings, eight hits and two runs in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Yankees, has been skipped. Francona said Pauley would be bullpen-available on Saturday.

In other news:

  • David Wells was scheduled to visit a San Diego orthopedist tomorrow morning for a second opinion on his ailing right knee. Wells is having trouble bearing weight on that leg ...

  • Derek Jeter remained out of the early Yankee lineup with a sprained right thumb, needing another day to recover from being hit off the thumb with a Rodrigo Lopez fastball last Sunday.

  • Francona said Keith Foulke's sore back was better and while he didn't promise he'd be available tonight, the reliever should be good to go for the weekend series against Texas barring a setback.
