More wet weather
The good news tonight for the Red Sox is that they can’t lose if the game gets rained out.
The National Weather Service forecast for the Bronx calls for occasional rain (the Globe’s Gordon Edes confirmed a steady rain in New York earlier today) and possibly a thunderstorm this afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. More rain is likely tonight (90 percent chance).
The Herald's Jeff Horrigan reported at 3:08 p.m. that the Yankees plan to open the gates to the public on schedule with the hopes of trying to get tonight’s game in. Stay tuned here for more weather updates as game time approaches.
In the meantime, let’s take a look at some of the numbers from the Red Sox daily notes package:
Big start for Schill: Sox ace Curt Schilling looks to become the first nine-game winner in the majors tonight in the Bronx when he goes for career win No. 201. This will be the third time Schilling has faced the Bombers in 2006. Schilling beat the Yankees on May 22 at Fenway, limiting them to just one run on five hits in eight innings, matching his season high. Back on May 10, he allowed three home runs in a loss at Yankee Stadium.
Schilling has not walked a batter in his last four starts. He leads the AL with an 8.11-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio.
The Sox ace went 4-1 with a 5.23 ERA in five starts in May after going 4-1 with a 2.88 ERA in six starts in April.
All tied up: The Red Sox and Yankees have met 80 times during the regular season and postseason over the last four years, and each team has won 40 games. With four straight wins, the Yankees have taken a 5-4 edge in the 2006 series. The Yankees have won the last four games since a Red Sox victory on May 22 in Boston. The Sox have dropped the last five one-run decisions in their series with the Yankees since a 3-2 victory on April 24, 2004.
Manny being dominating: Manny Ramirez was 2 for 3 on Tuesday (and just missed a game-tying homer in the eighth inning) to improve his 2006 average against New York to .484 (15-31) with five homers and 13 RBIs in nine games.
