While acknowledging that David Pauley was whacked around pretty well in Toronto (11 hits), manager Terry Francona said the Sox decided it was better to run him out for another start than to call up another pitcher.
That's sure to disappoint those fans who were hoping the Sox might summon one of the two young studs, Jonathan Lester or Craig Hansen, although Theo Epstein had already ruled out Lester to the Globe's Chris Snow, saying he didn't think Yankee Stadium was the right place for Lester to make his big-league debut.
"It was his first major-league start,'' Francona said of Pauley's outing in Toronto. "All things considered, we felt it was a good idea for him to pitch again. He showed enough poise, he did sink the ball. He gave up a lot of hits, and didn't command at times...but we saw enough to (start him again), rather than have somebody else come into Yankee Stadium for the first time.''
