Alex Gonzalez is taking the night off to give an ailing knee a bit of rest, Terry Francona said, adding that Gonzalez hurt his knee after jumping up to catch a line drive in Tampa Bay during the team's last road trip. Francona, uncertain which knee is hurting the shortstop, said Gonzalez has been limping a bit and could play but would be uncomfortable.

No news on the infection that sent Trot Nixon to the hospital yesterday, though Francona did say a realistic target for the right fielder's return is now Sept. 1 -- Francona had been predicting Nixon would join the team on the upcoming road trip.

Francona was getting ready this afternoon to see how Keith Foulke is doing. If the reliever checks out, Francona said Foulke will be activated Friday sometime.

The order for Friday's pitchers has been decided -- Jason Johnson will go first followed by Jon Lester, with Doug Mirabelli probably catching Lester and Javy Lopez catching Johnson. Francona also said the team will likely go with 13 pitchers for the weekend.

As soon as Tim Wakefield's rib allows, he will join the team -- no rehab stint for the knuckleballer. Francona is hoping that return will happen when the Sox are in Seattle next week.
