Manny might play left
By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff
For those of you who missed some of the news from the Sox clubhouse following Friday night's 6-0 loss to the Mariners, Terry Francona said after the game that he expected Manny Ramirez to play left field tonight.
It will be interesting to see going forward just how much left field Ramirez can play given his sore knee. The Sox may have to use David Ortiz at first base from time-to-time in order to keep the potent 3-4 punch in the lineup.
Both Theo Epstein and John Henry were on hand for the series. There was no reason given as to why both were on hand. Epstein sat in on Francona's post-game meeting with the press.
Josh Beckett will attempt to play catch today with a covering on the cut of his right middle finger. The session could go far in determing whether Beckett will make his next start Tuesday in Oakland or whether he might have to be pushed back a day or two.
We'll have to monitor Wily Mo Pena, who felt soreness in his left wrist after his third at-bat and left the game. Pena was examined by Mariner doctors during the game. While no X-rays were taken, pena said afterward he might have tendinitis. Pena said the injury has nothing to do with his recent hand surgery.
Congratulations to former colleague Bob Finnigan of the Seattle Times, who calls it a career this weekend, fittingly against the Red Sox. Finnigan was the Sox beat writer at the Quincy Patriot Ledger for many years - from 1969 until the early 1980s - when he ventured out West to cover the Mariners. He broke in with Peter Gammons and the Lowell Sun's Charles Scoggins and provided his readers tremendous information and perspective.
