Notes from the Sox dugout

By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff

-- Kevin Youkilis will miss tonight's game due to a stomach virus he caught from third base coach DeMarlo Hale, who caught a bug last night. Youkilis was a late arrival at the ball park today.

-- Pitcher Josh Beckett revealed he has a small cut on the side of his right middle finger. He received treatment today. When asked about pitching on his next start he said, "see how it goes."

-- Mark Loretta will play first base for the first time this season. He so happened to bring his first base mitt on the West Coast trip for no reason. Loretta said his sore quad is getting better.

-- Red Sox top brass John Henry, Tom Werner and Theo Epstein are scheduled to join the team in Seattle today.

-- Terry Francona said Trot Nixon and Jason Varitek are making positive progress towards returning to the lineup after a workout at Fenway today.
