Ortiz update
David Ortiz will be examined over the next few days after being ordered to return to Boston from Oakland with what the team described as "palpitations".
"Prior to Monday night's game in Oakland, David Ortiz experienced palpitations and was removed from the lineup,” Sox team doctor Thomas Gill said in a statement. “At that time, it was determined that he would return to Boston to undergo further examination and testing to determine the cause of these recurring symptoms. The examination and testing will be done over the next few days led by Red Sox team internist Dr. Larry Ronan, with the support of a group of specialists."
This was the second occurrence of the heart irregularity in the last 10 days for Ortiz, who spent a night in a hospital during the recent Sox-Yankees series and was released in time to play in the next day’s game. According to the Red Sox, Ortiz was examined by specialists and a series of tests were performed before he was let go.
"With the recurrence of these symptoms, we would like David to be fully examined and tested before he is allowed to return to the field," Gill said.
The Red Sox said that more information will be released as it becomes available.
"He will get a clean bill of health before he plays again," manager Terry Francona said in Oakland. "The games are important, but we have a responsibility to do what's right."
