Just what the Red Sox need, another injury to a starter.

Mike Lowell, who left Tuesday's game in the eighth inning after fouling a pitch off his right foot, was taken out after the eighth inning of Boston's 7-6 loss to the Cleveland Indians.

Lowell looked hobbled running out a grounder to second in the fifth, after fouling a ball off his left foot, and was finally replaced by Alex Cora, who pinch hit for catcher Ken Huckaby in the eighth, in the field in the top of the ninth.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona said after the game that Lowell would be examined further in Tampa on Friday.

-- Huckaby went 1 for 3 with a run batted in in his Red Sox debut. This was both the beginning and the end for Huckaby, who was designated for assignment after the game, yet another sign that the Sox plan to make a deal for Baltimore's Javy Lopez. Huckaby drove in a run in the second with a chopper to first, but hit into a crucial double play with the bases loaded and no outs in the sixth.

-- Cleveland's Jake Westbrook got the win despite allowing 15 hits. He's the first pitcher to win a game in which he allowed 15 hits since John Dopson, a former Red Sox hurler, turned the trick for the Montreal Expos against Atlanta on July 3, 1988.

-- Alex Gonzalez talked about the nifty 6-4-3 double play he and Mark Loretta turned to end a bases loaded threat in the seventh. Gonzalez went behind the second base bag and flipped the ball with his glove to Loretta, who barehanded it and sent it on. "You don't want to give a step to the runner," he said. "It's a tough play. I had to make a decision to flip it with my glove or try to pass it barehanded. I flipped it with the glove." Yes, Gonzalez said he practices the glove flip.
