Wells update

By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff

At this hour the Red Sox' best trading partner for David Wells appeared to be the San Diego Padres. The Sox were eyeing left-handed catching prospect George Kottaras, currently with the Portland Beavers.

Major league sources said that it appears the Sox have eliminated the St. Louis Cardinals because Wells has expressed a desire to be traded near his San Diego home. The Padres and Dodgers remain the front-runners, but the Sox asked for outfielder Matt Kemp which was rejected by the Dodgers.

One concern is the fact that Wells is scheduled to make his next start tomorrow at Fenway. Things should start heating up later this evening.
