Tim Wakefield, who pitched six innings today, said he hadn't heard from manager Terry Francona that Jonathan Papelbon would be closing, but said if it's true, "it makes us a better team.''

"He was lights out last year. I'd love to have him back as closer. It makes us a better team.''

Papelbon is in his third inning of work. He gave up a run on a couple of singles in the seventh, struck out two in a 1-2-3 eighth, and is now in the bottom of the ninth inning with the potential winning run on second after a walk and sacrifice.

4-4. Wily Mo and Kevin Youkilis both hit long home runs for the Sox. Chase Utley took Wakefield deep.
