Varitek homers

By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff

FORT MYERS --One of the most important items of the day was that Jason Varitek broke an 0-for-17 slump with a solo homer in the fifth inning batting right-handed against Erik Bedard, the only hit the Orioles ace allowed in five innings.

There's been a lot of concern about Varitek's bat, but he certainly connected to left-center. It's a hit the Sox are hoping will get the switch-hitting catcher going at the plate.

Curt Schilling held a brief press conference with writers after the game. He'll likely have more in his blog later. He threw a very economical 85 pitches, 60 for strikes. He left trailing 2-1 after the seventh inning.

Schilling looked in mid-season form and felt "I'm far ahead of where I was last year."

Box Score: Red Sox 3, Orioles 2
