Meche superb
By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff
KANSAS CITY - Gil Meche is all done after 7-1/3 innings, allowing six hits and really holding the Sox lineup in check.
He departed after Dustin Pedroia's single to center in the eighth.
Before the third largest Opening Day crowd in Royals' history - 41,257 - Meche who signed a 5-year, $55 million deal this off-season - left to a standing ovation and right before he could attempt his fourth consecutive strikeout of Julio Lugo.
Lugo, who achieved the hat trick, was able to single in the top of the eighth against reliever Joel Peralta.
Meche's outing was the longest by a Royals starter on OD since Bret Saberhagen went 8 innings in a 5-3 loss to the Jays on April 4, 1988.
