Sox-gate, plus

By Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff

The circle of bodies was about five people thick, with camera crews flown in from Boston, and questions solely about the issue of the hour. Did he or didn't he tell Gary Thorne that the blood was not real?

Mirabelli said that, when Thorne mentioned the bloody sock, all he said was that the team got a lot of publicity from it. Nothing about it not being blood.

Thorne, who held his press conference outside near home plate, said, "I was flabbergasted. I talked to Doug. He was wonderful. We had a complete discussion about it this afternoon. It was a misunderstanding as to what was said in the clubhouse at the time. He said one thing and I heard something else. I reported what I heard and what I honestly thought was said. And after talking him today there is no doubt in my mind, that’s not what he said, that’s not what he meant. He explained why in the context of the sarcasm and jabbing that goes in the clubhouse, which I understand, that things can be said like that when I took it as something serious and it wasn’t."

He added that Mirabelli had never mentioned that it might be paint on the sock.

Thorne spoke with Terry Francona, and left his number with Sox media relations chief John Blake for Curt Schilling to call him if need be.

Schilling declined to talk about the situation today.
