Double?
By Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff
One batter after it appeared that J.D. Drew beat a throw from second baseman Brian Roberts (he was called out), Kevin Youkilis was the beneficiary of a misplay by Jay Payton in left. Off the bat, Payton retreated all the way to the warning track to try to grab the fly ball.
Except he realized the wind was blowing in enough that the ball wasn't going to make it close to the warning track.
The ball ended up dropping almost halfway to the infield, and Payton didn't make it back fast enough. The play was scored a double. Payton did redeem himself by grabbing Jason Varitek's fly with no problems.
