Pavano surgery Ok'd
By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff
NEW YORK - After four doctor opinions produced the same diagnosis - that former Red Sox righty Carl Pavano had at least a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow - the Yankees agreed to allow Pavano to have Tommy John Surgery yesterday.
According to Pavano's agent, Gregg Clifton, "we reached a consensus agreement between Carl and the team that will allow Carl to have surgery."
It's expected that Dr. James Andrews will perform the surgery as early as next Friday in Birmingham, Ala. The injury takes about 12-18 months of recovery and it appears that Pavano's Yankee career could be over. But there is a chance he could be ready by next August.
