The big lead

By Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff

A couple of interesting items, courtesy of today's game notes from the Red Sox media relations folks:

  • The Red Sox' lead of six games in the AL East is the largest advantage in team history after the first 30 games of a season. The next closest was a 5 1/2 game lead after the first 30 games of the pennant winning 1946 season.

  • In other Sox team record news, tonight's starter Josh Beckett will attempt to become just the sixth pitcher in Red Sox history to get a win in his first seven starts in a season. Babe Ruth and Dave Ferriss are tied with a team-record eight straight wins to start a season.
