Salty informed of trade

By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff

Super catching prospect Jarrod Saltalamacchia was informed just moments ago by Braves general manager John Schuerholz that he's been traded to the Texas Rangers in a big package deal for Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira.

Saltalamacchia is the centerpiece of the deal. We don't know all of the piecs quite yet, but the Braves might also be acquiring lefty Ron Mahay, a former Red Sox replacement player outfielder. The deal also includes Braves shortstop prospect Elvis Andrus and two minor league pitchers.

Baseball America rates Saltalamacchia and Andrus as the Braves' top two prospects in their organization.

On the surface it appears that Texas GM Jon Daniels has made a very good deal receiving up-the-middle help in Salty and Andrus, two players who should be All-Stars.

Salty was excited about going to Texas where he can catch, play some first and DH. But he'll eventually be the everyday catcher.

Now the Braves have to figure out how to keep Teixeira long term. The Braves don't ususally sign players to big deals - especially Scott Boras clients. This is an indication they will likely not re-sign Andruw Jones.
