Schilling pleased with first start

By Monique Walker, Globe Staff

Curt Schilling said he looked to a variety of indicators to prove he is progressing after his performance at Pawtucket tonight.

When Schilling reached back for a little extra on a couple of pitches, he said the velocity was there that hadn’t been in past months. He reached 94 mph today.

“That wasn’t there for all of spring training and all of this year,” he said.

Schilling’s start attracted 11,227 fans, the seventh largest crowd in PawSox history.

While a second start is slated for Thursday, Schilling said he did not know if a third appearance would be needed.

Although Schilling said he felt good about today’s performance he is not done working.

“I still have to work. I still have to get sharper,” he said. “…There’s just a feel to it that comes with getting out there and competing consistently, and that certainly is not going to be there after three innings.”

The PawSox won the game, 6-5.
