Ay, Papi
The Sox have taken a 6-5 lead in the fifth after a monster grand slam by David Ortiz.
Eric Hinske, continuing tonight's episode of The Broken Bat Follies, led off the inning with a slow roller to first baseman Casey Kotchman that sent half his bat flying near the pitchers' mound. Jered Weaver wisely chose to avoid a twirling piece of broken lumber, but by doing so it left no one to cover first, and Hiske arrived easily. The next batter, Coco Crisp, then nailed a double off the right center field wall, and Weaver hit Alex Cora in the leg to load the bases with no outs. Julio Lugo delivered a two-run single up the middle, then Kevin Youkilis followed with a single to load the bases again.
On the first pitch of the at-bat Weaver delivered a straight down the middle fastball that Ortiz crushed high and far into the night. He knew it was out immediately, walking a few paces out of the batter's box before starting his home run trot. It was the seventh grand salami of Papi's career.
Manny Ramirez struck out and then J.D. Drew popped a single to center for his 1,000th career hit. When first base umpire Mike Winters asked for the ball, Weaver gave it a backhand roll towards him, obviously upset with his performance. As he tossed the ball away, manager Mike Scoscia was striding to the mound to remove him. Darren Oliver is now onto pitch, and it's 6-5 Sox in the bottom of the fifth, still just one out.
