Big oops gives Sox early lead
With Ichiro DHing today, much ballyhooed rookie Adam Jones is playing CF for the M's. That's not working out so well for Seattle, as Jones dropped Manny Ramirez's sacrifice fly in a two-run Sox first.
Coco Crisp led off with a double and took third on Kevin Youkilis's liner to center. David Ortiz walked and advanced to second on a passed ball, Coco holding third. Manny launched a ball to the wall in center, where Jones stuck up his glove and watched the ball clank off it. Manny gets credit for a sacrifice and RBI as Crisp scored, Ortiz took third and Manny second on the error. Miguel Batista intentionally walked J.D. Drew to load the bases. Mike Lowell popped out, but Batista walked Jason Varitek to force in a second run.
Josh Beckett got a couple of quick outs before Jose Guillen, the man of four whiffs the night before, singled. Ben Broussard then struck out on a pitch in the dirt, but when the ball bounced away for a wild pitch, he reached second. Julio Lugo scooped up Adrian Beltre's grounder, and the inning was over.
Some cool stuff happening here. They had a softball HR hitting contest by some touring behemoths, one of whom hit one into the third deck in right, and another nearly hit one to the top of the seats in left. Wily Mo was among the Sox watching from the dugout steps.
And the Blue Angels, who are in town for the Seattle Seafair, are visible from the ballpark as they fly in exquisite formation.
I also understand my compassion for your weather situation was missplaced. Chris S. dropped me an e-mail to tell me it's 76 and beautiful back home. Glad to hear the heat has broken.
