Big Papi time

By Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff

Though it has oft been lamented over the course of this season that David Ortiz hasn't come through in the clutch quite as much as he has in the past, he certainly did that just now.

With one out in the eighth inning, Francisco Rodriguez bounced a pitch to Ortiz, scoring Julio Lugo from third. That left men on second and third for Ortiz. (Pretty good speed on the bases, by the way, with Lugo, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Coco Crisp on the bags.)

And he delivered.

Sending a gap shot between left and centerfield, Ortiz drove home Ellsbury and Crisp to tie the score.

Then Manny Ramirez's double down the left field line scored Ortiz. The RBI was his 1,596th of his career. That ties George Brett for 29th on the all-time list.

But, more importantly, it gave the Sox the lead. It's 5-4, Sox.
