Rivera saves it for Yanks
By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff
NEW YORK - Mariano Rivera retired all four batters he faced to preserve a 4-3 victory for the Yankees before 54,986.
The Yankees, now six games behind the Red Sox and tied with Seattle for the wild-card lead, won it on Alex Rodriguez' 43rd home run in the bottom of the 7th against Josh Beckett, who failed to win his 17th and lost against boyhood idol Roger Clemens, who went six innings for the Sox.
The Red Sox made it a game when Kevin Youkilis struck for his 14th home run in the 8th. But Rivera was vintage last night. It sets up this afternoon's game where the Sox will try to avoid a sweep with Curt Schilling facing Chien-Ming Wang..
