The Runnin' Rays

By Daniel Malloy, Globe Correspondent

Not sure if they are seeing something in Matsuzaka's delivery or just trying to take as many chances as possible, but the Devil Rays seem to be attempting to steal bases at every possible opportunity.

Carl Crawford took second in the first inning, and in the second Brendan Harris -- after reaching on a bloop single -- tried to steal and was gunned down by Jason Varitek. Then after Jonny Gomes walked, he took off, beating Varitek's throw for another steal.

But Dice-K got out of the inning, stranding Gomes at second, when shortstop Ben Zobrist flied out to Manny Ramirez at the warning track. Tampa is 1 for 3 on SBs and up 1-0 as we enter the bottom of the second.
