Though Jacoby Ellsbury led off the inning with a single to center, in trying to stretch it to a double, he was thrown out by Vernon Wells. That proved a good lesson to Dustin Pedroia, whose single to the gap merited a large turn around first base. But Pedroia wisely retreated back to first, as he would have certainly been out at second.

David Ortiz then struck out for the third time in the game, followed by a groundout to second by Mike Lowell for the final out of the game. Played in a speedy 2 hours, 13 minutes, the Red Sox still fell 6-1 to the Blue Jays and, with the Yankees winning, they are in danger of slashing their lead in the AL East to 3 1/2 games.
