Changing his tune?

By Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff

Terry Francona is usually one of the biggest proponents of not bringing his closer into a tie game on the road.

OK, so it's not tied.

It's still a very curious decision for Francona to bring Jonathan Papelbon into this game at this moment. Not only are the bases loaded with one out in the eighth inning, but the Red Sox are still losing the game, 2-1.

It's only the third time this season Papelbon has entered a game with the Red Sox trailing by one run. He has also come into one game in which the Sox were down by three, but he was coming into that one solely to get innings in. He might have been doing the same tonight, since his last outing was on Friday, with the day off tomorrow.
