Ortiz's knee hurting again

By Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff

No updates on Manny Ramirez (though David Ortiz said he saw him swinging earlier today), but there is news on Ortiz's right knee, the one with the torn meniscus.

"Man, my knee's been hurting again," Ortiz said. "I don't know. I guess a day off never [is] bad. I was missing a lot of pitches yesterday.

"Probably get a day off, so against a guy that kind of owns you ... it's not bad."

Ortiz is 5-for-34 lifetime against Devil Rays starter Scott Kazmir, with one home run and four RBI.

He did confirm that, at the end of this season, he will have to have surgery on his right knee, though there are no formal plans in place to have the work done.

"I definitely have to, otherwise I'm going to be going through this next year again and I don't feel like it," Ortiz said. "And it might get worse. I'm not getting any younger."

For now, he's trying to make sure that he doesn't aggravate the injury more than he needs to.

"Just like it was at the beginning," he said of the pain. "That's why I've been trying not to force it too much. Try to run when I have to. If I don't really have to, I just try to slow down because every time I put pressure on it, it bothers me."
