Pena comes up empty in first inning

By Nancy Marrapese-Burrell, Globe Staff

Starting pitcher Curt Schilling was impressive early, earning a one-two-three first inning against the Devils Rays. With two out, former Red Sox player Carlos Pena stepped to the plate. Pena, a former standout at Haverhill High and Northeastern University, came into the game with 38 home runs, which is second only to Yankees' slugger Alex Rodriguez. Pena wound up striking out.

Pena had just one homer in 18 games with Boston last year. In 2005, he had 18 in 79 games with the Detroit Tigers. In 2004, in 142 contests with the Tigers, Pena racked up 27 homers.
