Cards and the clubhouse

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff October 12, 2007 05:07 PM

Apparently we haven't mentioned the cribbage obsession in the Red Sox clubhouse (and, actually, many baseball clubhouses), so I'll pass along some words from Curt Schilling from today's pregame media session.

The response was to a question regarding Terry Francona's value as a manager. Needless to say, don't necessarily take these words as coming in a serious tone. The two are close.

"Being with him together for 10 years, he is absolutely humble when it comes to the game of baseball, and I would say that's probably the only thing he's humble at in life," Schilling said. "He's not nearly the card player he thinks he is. He's a tactician on the field and off, and I think that gets overlooked. I know he finds the right guys to play cards with all year long to win money, which is something he's never been bad at."

[Schilling goes on to praise Francona thoroughly as a manager, but we're just interested in the card-playing portion. For now, at least.]

Oh, don't feel too bad for Francona. He crushed Dustin Pedroia in cribbage yesterday...
