NEW YORK - What an absolutely embarrassing performance by Chien Ming Wang. The 19-game winner out together two brutal starts. He allowed nine hits and eight earned runs in Game 1 over 4-2/3 innings. He topped that by getting yanked in the second inning, trailing 2-0 and allowing the bases to be loaded with nobody out.

Yankee fans were chanting "Moose! Moose! as Mike Mussina began warming up. he entered the game, induced a double-play grounder scoring the third run and a single Asdrubal Cabrera to make it 4-0.

The Yankees are also squandering chances. There wasn't a baseball person I spoke to today who thought Byrd had much of a chance against the Yankees. They left two runners on base in the first two innings with nothing to show for it.

One key umpires decision could change this game. Homeplate umpire Fieldin Culbreth ruled that Kelly Shoppach was hit with a pitch in bunt attempt. The replays showed the ball might have hit the barrel of the bat near the hand. The Yankees protested and following an umpire huddle, it was ruled a hit-by-pitch. Bases loaded, nobody out.
