Report: Girardi offered job

The Yankees have reportedly offered their managing job to Joe Girardi, and the former Yankees catcher is expected to accept the position, a source told an ESPN radio station in New York this morning.

The report, described in an ESPN.com story, cites a source indicating that Girardi will fly to New York and that the announcement could come as soon as Tuesday.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman told candidates Don Mattingly and Tony Pena that they will not be getting the job, according to the report.

Girardi would replace Joe Torre, who managed the Yankees for 12 years but declined a contract extension earlier this month. Girardi was National League Manager of the Year in 2006 when he managed the Florida Marlins in his only stint as a Major League manager.
