Sox will face Cleveland

NEW YORK - The Red Sox have an ALCS opponent.

It is the Cleveland Indians, Friday at 7:10 p.m. at Fenway.

The Indians held off the Yankees 6-4 last night at a very quiet Yankee Stadium where a disappointing season ended with yet another Yankee playoff loss, which will surely bring on many changes to the complexion of the Yankees' team likely starting with manager Joe Torre.

The Yankees never overcame a 4-0 deficit as the Indians scored two in the first and two in the second inning. Bobby Abreu homered off Indians closer Joe Borowski with one out in the ninth to briefly raise the spirits of the 56,315 on hand. But A-Rod flied out to right and Jorge Posada hit one foul homer, he struck out to end the game.

"New York, New York!" was played after the final out. It's a song that's usually played after a Yankee win.

The Indians jumped out of the dugout and celebrated on the field as many Yankee players sat in the dugout and watched helplessly.

The Indians and Sox open up Friday with the Indians likely to start tough lefty C.C. Sabathia against Josh Beckett. The Yankees-Red Sox last faced each other in the 1999 divisional series. Each franchise has won one World Series since 1920 - the Indians in 1948 and the Red Sox in 2004.

The Indians last appeared in the World Series in 1997 vs. the Florida Marlins.
