Red Sox great Luis Tiant will be tossing a different pitch this weekend, joining the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Bill Richardson for appearances in New Hampshire.
Tiant's move follows the high-profile backing of Curt Shilling for Republican John McCain.
Richardson, New Mexico's governor and a Tufts grad, said he was proud to have a competitor like Tiant on his team. “Luis and I share an affinity for Red Sox baseball and maybe the occasional cigar,” Richardson said in a news release today.
The two, who also share Latin heritage and Spanish-language skills, will appear at a reception entitled Mi Familia Con Richardson in Manchester, N.H., on Saturday evening.
The Cuban-born Tiant said Richardson's vision and experience drew him to the candidate. Tiant, in the release, said he also liked Richardson's ''record of delivering in the clutch.''
