Just heard from Margie Ellsbury, Jacoby's mom, and yes, she's happy that her son is still with the Sox.

"I'm glad it's finally settled,'' she said in an e-mail, "and our boys (Jacoby, Clay, Jed) got to stay in Boston.''

Clay is Clay Buchholz, of course, while Jed is Jed Lowrie.

"Since the boys are staying,'' Margie wrote, "I wore my Red Sox shirt to work today. GO RED SOX.''

I have yet to connect with Jacoby, by either phone or e-mail, but Ian Browne over at MLB.com caught him yesterday, and Jacoby expressed satisfaction that he is staying here and looking forward to competing with Coco Crisp for the center field job.

  1. Having seen many great ball players over my 76 years, I am delighted that Jacoby Ellsbury is staying with the Red Sox. No rookie, since Ted in 1939, has made this kind of impression on me. He runs like a deer...catches everything he reaches...and he hits big time Jacoby will be one of the really special ons...and he'll do it for Boston..

  1. Santana's in the National League, we don't have to face him until the World Series. Now the pressure's really on, this isn't Minnesotaaaaaaaaaah anymore!! If Santana doesn't produce and win right out of the gate (ex. Josh Beckett-2006) he'll wish he was back in the cold weather state of Minnesotaaaaaah, instead of the "purgatory" heat that the NY journalist's will unleash on him. The NY media will eat him alive if he stumbles. Santana's still pretty young by pitching standards, throws downright nasty stuff, and is intimidating on the mound, but god forbid he gets injured or doesn't live up to this ridiculous contract (you thought A-Fraud's was a ludacris contract) for a guy that pitches every 5 days, they'll burn the city down. Keeping Ellsbury, Lester, Lowrie, Masterson , and Bucholz just made my year!!

  1. Amen to that. Jacoby belongs on the Red Sox. He is going to be a very solid player for us for a very long time. I think we would have commited a grave mistake if we had traded him, Jed and Clay to the Twins.

  1. Having Santana , would of been great, but after pouring $150 on Santana and hopefully agreeing to Manny's contract extensions at $20 million or signing him for a few more years it just makes sense not to get Santana . Jacoby will hopefully have a year like Dustin in the outfield. If Lester can get into a grove we win without Santana and still keep our youth . The Sox are young for the most part for all , but 3 positions . Veritek, Lowell, Remerize , but Lowell showed that anyone is capabale of having a great year if your surrounded by a great team . Theo is on the right track for the future of the francise and if we can keep a steady ship the Sox should be in the mix of things for many more years . It's just awesome that we are the francise to be modeled after an 84 year slump. This coming year should be very intresting and just maybe we'll have another parade in October .

  1. This is the best news we've had in weeks!!! Losing Ellsbury would have been at the level of losing Carlton, Nomar, Roger, Babe, and Jimmy Piersall. We couldn't take another hit like that from the Red Sox at our age. Thanks!!!!

  1. Jacoby has the job. Coco will play the ever changing rest day for the outfield and Jacoby will be moved around as Coco plays center field when he is in the game.
Next year Manny may be gone (2009). Coco if he hits will play center Jacoby left and Moss and Drew will play right.
If Coco doesn't hit he will be traded during this year's playing season to some team that needs a center fielder. The exception to this might be if some team offers up a big prize for Coco then things will move along differently and MY Sox will have to adjust as they did last year.
We need a second catcher badly and if some prize comes along they could take Coco and let him go.
My personal thoughts point to Coco, Jacoby, and Moss will be the outfield going forward and Drew will be the odd man out. I think his better playing days are behind him.

  1. does JE return any fan mail? my son sent a picture we took of him w/ JE pre-Sox draft where he's nonetheless sporting a Sox hat as he came out of locker room after Oregon State Beavers won super regional to earn college world series berth for 1st time in 40 years- son hand wrote a note and asked JE to sign picture but we never got a response. any ideas about where to re-send would be appreciated.

  1. As a seventy seven year old Red Sox fan, I am glad that I did live long enough to see the sox do so well lately. They did well before, but did not win all the marbles.
I Hope both young Ellsbury and Crisp have a good year and thank then for last year.
my only regret is that I am rooting from Maryland.
