All present and accounted for

Terry Francona said everyone was present and accounted for today ... that's 21 pitchers and 7 non-roster invitees, and 4 catchers and 1 non-roster invitee.

The team underwent physicals this morning, then came out for some conditioning drills this afternoon for about an hour, coming off the field at about 2:30 p.m.

Among those taking part in the drills was Curt Schilling. He is the only player, Francona said, that as of today will not be following the regular program for pitchers in camp. "He was quiet today,'' Francona said, "which is certainly understandable.''

It can be hard for players who are rehabbing, the manager said. "You feel like a wall goes up,'' he said, "especially once the games start counting.''

Don't know yet whether Schill will address the media. He came off the field briefly at one point, causing camera crews to scurry. "I'm not talking guys,'' he said. "I'm going to the bathroom.''

Francona said pitchers will throw two side sessions, which is one more than usual. The starters will throw tomorrow, relievers Sunday, starters again Monday, and relievers again Tuesday. They won't face hitters until their time on the mound. Reliever Hideki Okajima was spotted coming off the field after a bullpen session, which he threw on his own.

Catchers will do their defensive drills and hit on two fields (coaches pitching), and another field will be designated for other position players who show up early, should they decide to work out.

Position players aren't due until the 20th; with first full workout the 22d. Francona said he hasn't spoken to Manny Ramirez directly, but has heard he plans to be here on time. The only player the Sox expect to be late is outfielder Bobby Kielty, whose wife pregnant. The outfielder had said the couple planned to induce labor on the 27th, when the team is scheduled to visit the White House as World Series champs.

Francona, GM Theo Epstein and pitching coach John Farrell met individually with each pitcher this morning, with bullpen coach Gary Tuck joining the individual discussions with catchers. This is the second year the Sox have held such meetings, Francona said; the idea was first put forth by Farrell when he joined the Sox in '07.

"There's not a lot you need to tell guys like Beckett and Jason Varitek,'' Francona said. "But you want to make sure there's an understanding with each player.''

Francona was wearing a new warmup top, red with detachable blue sleeves.
