The Red Sox have made it official: Terry Francona has agreed to a three-year deal with two option years. The deal will keep the skipper with the team through the 2011 season, and is expected to place Francona among the highest-paid managers in the game, which would place him in the $3 million to $4 million range. We expect him to address the issue shortly in his media briefing.

Here are a couple of quick quotes from the press release:

“On behalf of John Henry, Tom Werner, Larry Lucchino, and the Red Sox organization, I am very pleased to make this announcement,” GM Theo Epstein said in the release. “Terry Francona has done an outstanding job in managing the Red Sox over the last four seasons. This is demonstrated not only in the three playoff appearances and two World Series victories but also in the way in which he handles the demands of managing in Boston on a day-to-day basis, both on and off the field. It also represents a strong and sincere commitment by our ownership.”

“I want to thank the Red Sox ownership and management for their tremendous support,” Francona said, in the release. “From the resources provided by the ownership group and front office to a great collection of players and the passion and loyalty of the fans, there is no doubt that Boston is the best place to manage in the major leagues. I look forward to being in a Red Sox uniform for many years to come.”

Back soon.

  1. Great news. I'm glad that this situation is rectified so Tito can now focus entirely on the prep of the team.

  1. It is about time!!!!
We fans all love Terry so much..... and I have never in all my years seen a manager loved to this extent by fans and players ...... nor a manager so willing to give so much in return. I would bet that there are few clubhouses with such good feeling and respect and funniness in the Majors.
As I said, it is about time. But, knowing Terry, I would doubt he was feeling insecure very much of the time. The entire Club Management would have had to go insane at the same time for this not to have happened!
All of us are so glad to have it "in print" and official at last.

  1. yay. I believe that my dad first took me to Fenway in 1958, which makes this my 50th year as full fledged member of the RSN (though I have not paid money for the privilege). Terry Francona is the best manager we have had in those years. Dick Williams and Joe Morgan come close and, believe it or not, Zim and Jimy Williams are the next two in my book.

He drives me crazy with his dopey optimism (he ought to be part of the Obama campaign), but the record suggests he might have a point. He has ben perfect for this team, and has shown he knows how to manage through the 162 games one way and the post season a different way. Can't ask for more than that.
