Opening spring pitching assignments; today's video

Posted by David Lefort, Boston.com Staff February 20, 2008 03:19 PM

It was a busy day in Fort Myers, with Terry Francona, David Ortiz, and Mike Lowell holding press conferences, Coco Crisp talking about wanting to be an everyday player, and Manny Ramirez arriving on time, as he had said he would.

Most of the newsworthy tidbits were covered by the Globe's Amalie Benjamin and Gordon Edes stationed in the Fort, but here is one tidbit we can pass along.

In his press briefing today, Francona laid out the Sox' pitching plan for the first five spring games:

  • Feb. 28 vs. Boston College (1:05 p.m. at City of Palms Park)
    Scheduled starter: Josh Beckett
Also likely to pitch: Kyle Snyder

  • Feb. 28 vs. Northeastern (6:05 p.m. at City of Palms Park)
    Scheduled starter: Justin Masterson
Also likely to pitch: Craig Hansen, Michael Bowden, and some other young pitchers

  • Feb. 29 vs. Twins (7:05 p.m. at Hammond Stadium)
    Scheduled starter: Daisuke Matsuzaka
Also likely to pitch: Julian Tavarez, Hideki Okajima

  • March 1 vs. Twins (1:05 p.m. at Hammond Stadium)
    Scheduled starter: Jon Lester
Also likely to pitch: Devern Hansack, David Pauley

  • March 2 vs. Twins (1:05 p.m. at City of Palms Park)
Likely to pitch: Tim Wakefield, Clay Buchholz
