Report: Sox, Colon agree
The Red Sox have agreed to the terms of a minor league deal with right-hander Bartolo Colon, a source told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.
Colon was 6-8 with 6.34 ERA last season, which was the worst of his career. Colon is 146-95 with a 4.10 ERA in 11 seasons. He won the 2005 Cy Young Award.

he's fat and old... and o yea he's fat
Low risk, potentially decent reward if Colon is remotely healthy...whats not to like about the deal?
WE CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH PITCHING. COULD BE A BIG PICK UP!
I don't see how this can hurt, and there is a big potential upside to this. I like it.
This looks like one of those moves the Patriots would make, picking up a former Cy Young winner ( 2005 ) with plenty of gas still left in the tank, or in Bartolo's case, tank's... This will prove too be a great move, Theo was really on his game sneaking this move under the radar of the pitching challenged Yankee's, nice move Theo, and welcome to the fan frenzy nation of Bean Town Bartolo , hope you're ready for the ride of a life time.
good insurance for the rotation and can help tutor the young pitchers
Like Other Post, If half healthy could help rotaion, I would give the Young arms the
chance,
Turst me, this is a good risk. He could, potentially, turn things around if he still has the desire. So much upside with his arm. A lot of innings and a lot of donuts. But, I hope this works out. It certainly is a better option than having a 75-80 MPH Schilling out there in mid-to-late July. Hats off for taking the chance.
Are they paying him in cash or doughnuts???
Absolutely cannot fault this signing. If he's got anything left in the tank then fantastic, if not cut him loose and it hasn't cost you anything. Also if he stays for the year and does reasonably well there could be draft picks if he moves on next winter. Win-win
This guy will be back.......he's too good to have back to back bad years.
I think this has the potential to be a good signing. If he is past all his recent ailments and can get into baseball shape (Not the shape of a capitol O) he good be a great asset to this rotation.
Now THIS is a guy that needs to have a weight clause in his contract...
Personally, I think with Colons recent injuries, and hie weight issue, he is probably washed up. Maybe they can squeeze a few good starts out of him. That would help keep the innings down for both Buckholz and Lester. For a minor league deal, it is a low risk, but possibly high reward.
Well, this isn't that bad a move. You never know, if Colon comes in and is motivated to make the staff, he might actually have his 2005 era stuff, as opposed to last year...
Not too shabby a replacement for the #5 starter if he earns his keep
I think Colon was a juicer and hasn't been able to stay fit and dominant without the benefit of performance-enhancing drugs. Without knowing the financials, this strikes me as an OK gamble. I just wouldn't expect much from him.
John Farrell should be able to work with Colon. This is a great place for a pitching coach to work with a guy who has had past success and John is one of the best. Sox have nothing to lose by this signing and because you can never have enough pitching. John should be signed for another 3 years to compliment Francona and our pitching staff.
Looks like the Sox are using the tried and true method the Patriots have used. Taking a bargain veteran who appears to have lost it, and bring them in hoping to get back to their old form in a Boston uniform. Let's just hope it's not Erid Gagne redux!
Low risk, high reward. I love this deal .
If he can get his head on straight and shed a few layers, he'll be fine.
win-win situation
sure, I'll gamble (low risk) with Colon. Could be a good spot starter or starter insurance. Well done theo!
Making smart, reasonable decisions learned from the best school in the USA, Brookline High!
No word yet on the details of the contract, but for someone who was a Cy Young award winner in 2005, this seems like a good deal. It is a minor league contract, so even if he tanks it was worth the risk. If he returns to anything resembling 2005, it was a phenomenal signing and great insurance for the starting rotation.
This is a vetern who needs to lose weight. Colon still has his arm speed but his weight has hindered his success. This is a great backup plan!
Brilliant move by Theo. Colon has plenty to prove before getting another big contract. He might be needed during the season and with him in the Sox system they can determine when and where.
What is not to like? He had a great season just two years ago. He might outpitch Santana year. Okay, that might be going too far
Not a bad signing, especially at this price. As we learned in 2005, you can never have too much pitching. This allows them to bring Buckholz along at a pace he can handle. Throwing Del Carmen and Hanson into the mix before they were ready really set their development back.
Depending on how well Tavarez and Colon do in the 5 spot, we should probably see Buckholz when we need him the most....right around the All Star game.
This could be a killer deal. Considering his injuries, its hard to imagine that Farrell would use him as a starter. But Colon could wind up in the pen-mix with Okie, Timlin, Delcarman and Lopez and bring another unpredictable presence in late innings.
His experience in working with the young guys can't hurt either.
With a little TLC, he may be able to recover some of that awesome arm strength and confidence that once (and not very long ago) made him a fearsome hombre. We could use a little 8th inning fear.
this could be a big deal for the RedSox- I think this guy(Colon) when motivated
to lose weight and get himself in shape will be a factor in this years pennant race
More proof the Sox have the smartest front office in baseball
is he gonna play for the patriots or red sox?
I think its a great signing...no risk. But, my guess is that he might be a great bullpen guy if he gets healthy...perhaps the Sox know its a stretch to get him back to starter level, but not so hard maybe to get him to 1-2 innings level...
I like this, high upside no downside
Great gamble by Theo....It cannot hurt to try and see if the former CY Young winner has anything left in the tank...He's been out of shape and all of those years throwing 200+ innings finally caught up with him...Let's keep our fingers crossed!
All upside to this deal and no risk. Might not amount to anything but another genius move by Theo.
thank god...i've been saying they should do this since shilling's shoulder was messed up again.
1st!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why not? Could be Junior Seau or ....or...Bartolo Colon...
Is he still fat or is he in shape? Could be a great comeback player or a "waist"ed roster spot. Very interesting signing. Red Sox Nation will have to wait and see.
Great. Why not? If not long term, why not let him fill in when Wake goes down for a few weeks...and you never know...maybe he comes back...then it's scary. Lose some weight.
The Sox have little to lose in signing Colon. They certainly don't need him, but if he works his way to Boston, he'd could be a terrific fill-in starter later in the year.
what is there to lose. the more the merrier.
I think its a good move to sign him to a minor league deal, hes coming off a very rough year. He can start in the farm system, and then hopefully gain some confidence and try to help us in the back end of our rotation in the summer.
