'Secret. ...'

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff February 13, 2008 02:52 PM

Well, we know one word that Hideki Okajima understands in English.

That would be "secret," the way he responded when asked what new pitches he'd worked on in the offseason, after he admitted that he'd done some experimenting with new techniques and pitches. But, clearly, he wasn't about to give it up.

He talked today, the only major league player to do so, after a lengthy workout session indoors.

He also added that he's going to try throwing fewer pitches outside of game situations so he can try to remain healthy throughout the whole season. He was shut down in September last year after he became fatigued, something also experienced by countryman Daisuke Matsuzaka.

"Although he wasn't used in as many important spots, Delcarmen's success last year rivaled that of Okajima. His ERA+ was actually better than Okajima's. Delcarmen was good for 11 holds (3rd most on the team) and a save to go with his 1.02 WHIP.

And while Daisuke may have struggled at times last year, his season was overall very solid for a rookie. In fact, he was the first rookie pitcher to record 200 strikeouts since Kerry Wood in 1998. And that was in the National League. You'd have to go back to 1984 to find the last American League rookie who accomplished that feat."
